CCTV Box Camera
Box Camera – Flexible Lens Options for Long-Distance Surveillance
A CCTV Box Camera is one of the most versatile surveillance cameras because its lens can be changed based on your viewing requirements. Unlike dome or bullet cameras with built-in lenses, a box camera allows you to choose exactly the focal length you need. This makes it ideal for situations where you must see further than 35 to 40 feet, or when you need precise control over zoom and field of view.
Choosing the Right Lens
C-Mount lenses for CCTV Box Cameras are available from 4mm to 50mm.
- A 4mm lens provides about a 70° angle of view and offers clear facial detail within 35 ft. This makes it suitable for small offices, indoor hallways, reception areas, or for monitoring a home driveway.
- A higher millimeter lens increases your viewing distance but narrows the field of view. For example, a 16mm lens gives about a 15° to 20° angle of view at a distance of 35 ft and can cover longer ranges like 140 ft with a narrower angle.
To understand this better:
- An 8mm lens behaves like a 4mm lens zoomed in 2×.
- A 16mm lens is like a 4mm lens zoomed in 4×, allowing you to focus on distant objects without compromising detail.
Varifocal Lens Advantage
Many installers prefer using a varifocal lens, which allows you to manually adjust the focal length—usually from 5mm to 50mm. This gives complete flexibility to fine-tune both the distance and angle of view during installation. Varifocal lenses are ideal for large commercial buildings, parking areas, loading bays, and any location where distances vary or precise adjustments are needed.
Where Box Cameras Work Best
- Commercial buildings
- Large warehouses and factories
- Long corridors or perimeter walls
- Outdoor areas requiring long-distance focus
- Places where lighting conditions may vary (box cameras work well with optional housings)
